Author Roger Pinckney attempts to give an inside look at the history, cultures and practices of the Gullah Geechee who inhabit the coast lines of South Carolina. He argues that slaves passed their African roots to their descendents in a rich and lasting oral tradition that survives to this today. Herbalism, spiritualism, and black magic came to be called "root work."
